Item #: SCP-060
Object Class: Safe
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-060 is contained in a 4m x 4m x 2.5 m room. All surfaces in said room are to be covered with paper in a manner that allows for efficient removal and replacement of said paper. The door to this room is to remain airtight and locked.
Subjects exposed to SCP-060’s surface are to be kept at Site 27’s psych ward and observed for further changes. Testing of affected subjects may be discontinued and termination initiated at the discretion of Dr. Vang.
Description: SCP-060 is an image of variable dimensions and nature, having the appearance of an illustration or design applied to a contiguous flat surface. No known mechanism accounts for the change in coloration of the surface that SCP-060 occupies. The boundaries of SCP-060 shift in such a way that the whole design moves across any given surface at a more-or-less constant speed of 0.5 metres per day and maintains an average area of 10-15 square metres. SCP-060 has never been observed to attempt to move through a space less than 9 cm wide and is apparently incapable of making sharp turns or reversals; otherwise, no patterns in its movement have been detected.
Colors appear to "fade in" along the leading edge of the direction of motion, becoming progressively more detailed and layered as it approaches the main body, while the reverse occurs on the trailing edge as each layer is erased. Pre-existing images or surface designs in the path of SCP-060 are absorbed by the leading edge and incorporated into the image. Photographic images or direct reproductions of photographs are not affected in this manner, and are treated as blank surfaces by SCP-060. Images that do not depict any particular objects or landscapes are altered in a manner that renders them identifiable to the average human; for example, a repeating pattern of red and green squares was, when introduced to SCP-060, changed into an image of numerous red and green square plates, upon which various food items were placed.
The view depicted is mobile and changes as the boundaries of SCP-060 shift, often in seemingly arbitrary ways. SCP-060 does not appear to be capable of depicting fluid motion; it has never been observed to change greater than five percent of its surface in one minute. Typically, SCP-060 will display a scene that contains a background and foreground, with objects occupying the foreground. No other generalizations can be made in regards to the content, style, or apparent medium of SCP-060.
Attempts to deface SCP-060 or cover it have been universally unsuccessful; the affected portions of SCP-060 will transfer to the surface directly below or above the affected area. In addition, the skin of any person who attempts to deface SCP-060 will begin to display irregular, brightly-colored patches, spreading from above the eyes to cover the entire body within two days. The appearance of these patches fluctuates rapidly when the subject is observed by another person. Subjects tend to have a negative reaction to the change in coloration, reporting paranoia and feelings of being watched and judged.
