Meeting point for Agent and the Target was Chuck Yeager airport. Final destination unclear at present. Reinforced Routing Sub-Terrain Network Facility (Site-01-V)

Target and Agent will be subsequently driving a yellow Pontiac Aztek.

SEVERUS: I've been sitting here smelling burnt hick for over an hour. You promised no delays this time.

MANN: Presumably, yes, I can see myself promising that. But it's not my fault the other passengers put up such a fuss.

SEVERUS: Not taking the bait. Let's go.

MANN: Some people just don't appreciate the true potential of mixing animals with crackers.

SEVERUS: Hungry?

MANN: God, yes. I could eat a horse. I mean it. I've seen it happen. Not by me. But you'd be amazed what a little tinkering with the digestive and neurological systems of a fit man can accomplish. Ever heard of Tarrare?

SEVERUS: Don't be gross. Since we're already behind schedule I want to stop by a little hole in the wall on the way. You'll pay if you spoil my appetite.

[DATA CORRUPTED]

MANN: Sport! I could watch the sweat glistening off their meaty calves all day. Just thinking about the muscles sliding against the bones as they push themselves towards peak performance gives me a case of the titters. Can't tell you a thing about them, but athletic technology has been one of the major inspirations for my work.

SEVERUS: The question was, and I won't repeat myself again, do you want to watch something on one of the TV's?

MANN: Do you know if they get HGTV here?

SEVERUS: Just look at the menu. I've already decided what I want.

MANN: I can't imagine how. A fine specimen like you, anything you could possibly order is going to send your homeostasis into a tailspin.

SEVERUS: Well, we wouldn't want that. Maybe just some water. Staying hydrated might be a difference-maker in the not too distant future.

MANN: Exactly. You're an organ donor, right? If we had an accident on the way there I could harvest them on the spot.

SEVERUS: Don't get any ideas. We've got to keep focused.

MANN: Are you sure they don't know what we're up to?

SEVERUS: If they did, we'd know by now. What do you think they would say to me, if they knew what we were up to?

MANN: "Traitor! You'll burn in hell. You're the common enemy of mankind."

SEVERUS: Those exact words?

MANN: It came to me once, in a dream. Last night. Few times before that. I think, once maybe, I did it. But they don't let you remember things like that if killing you would be wasteful.

SEVERUS: You can't keep a good id down.

MANN: Have you ever spoken to them? In the flesh?

SEVERUS: Not for a long time. They took more chances, then. There weren't as many who saw how much they were holding us back.

MANN: If they're ever all together, it would be such a simple thing.

SEVERUS: That's when they'd be the most dangerous. They're expecting it when they're together. Vigilant, and on high alert.

MANN: But if you could figure out a way around it, such a simple thing.

SEVERUS: If you're going to pitch your alternate plan, it's a little late.

MANN: Is it, though?

UNKNOWN: Who ordered the chicken wings and sauerkraut?

MANN: That'd be me.

UNKNOWN: You sure you just wanted the water, sir?

SEVERUS: Put it down here. Thank you.

MANN: I'm a hypocrite, I know.

SEVERUS: There's worse things you'll be by tomorrow.

MANN: Ohhh, you saucy boy.

SEVERUS: Chew with your mouth closed, please.

[DATA CORRUPTED]

SEVERUS: How long, Everett, will you go on abusing my patience?

MANN: Hang on, hang on, I'm only half-remembering these passwords. Just because these computers are ancient doesn't mean they're easier to crack.

SEVERUS: If you screw up there'll be half a dozen task forces on our ass in ten minutes. No pressure.

MANN: Ohhh, but we've seen those deployment maps. It's only entomologists and mountaineers that could get within the tri-county area before we're done.

SEVERUS: One, you definitely don't know that for sure. Two, even the supposedly pacifistic task forces can hold their own against anything the world behind the veil can throw at them.

MANN: When Theta-4 rolled through Site-19 a few years ago I remember thinking I could take them on. With some preparation, obviously.

SEVERUS: The scientific task forces were some of the last to go, but our security posture has evolved with the times. More skips out there means you can't allocate resources to a Task Force not able to beat them back.

MANN: There! That's the ticket. After you. And you're saying it's so simple then, to give a crypto-herpetologist a gun and expect a tangle with the big lizard to go their way?

SEVERUS: It's all about the maneuver. A small group with superior arms is best served if they can keep on their toes and improvise in any encounter. Lets you stretch the manpower out better. Surround the targets before they can strike.

MANN: Ahh, yes. Reminds me of my plan. I really think it will work. It's not incompatible with what we're doing here.

SEVERUS: You're a stubborn son of a bitch. We can talk about it when we get to the bottom of this.

MANN: How much further are we going to have to go?

SEVERUS: Once the communications are knocked out, we can pick them off one by one. You keep talking about the simple thing. It's simpler to take care of someone if they're isolated.

MANN: I meant down the stairs. I'm familiar with the plan just as much as you're familiar with my objections.

SEVERUS: You've just got one more terminal to bust and we're in. You're not wrong that in a perfect world there's a simplicity to keeping them all in one room but getting there in the real world is another thing.

MANN: It's a whole other kettle of fish but hear me out one more time. Who can they turn to for support? Only each other. Hang on, let me get past you here. Looks like the damned thing was built for dwarves.

SEVERUS: We are underground. Maybe it was a collaboration with Moria.

MANN: Oh, this shouldn't take long. We'll be in the belly of the beast, down the gullet after we've pried out the teeth. Which actually pop out pretty easily, if-

SEVERUS: When you're done, I'm ready to talk about your way of thinking. I'm maybe, maybe, coming around to it.

MANN: I had a gut feeling you would. I've been really mapping this out in my head, thinking over anything.

MECHANICAL GRINDING

There we are! Now luckily nothing we've done in phase one compromises our options. Go ahead, pick my brain. I'm sure I have every last contingency cover-
