I realize that I should feel horror and squick, but all I can think about is the sadness of people who are born to be slaves and that touching(ish) death ritual. Face it Djoric, you are incapable of writing something without feels. Side note: This questions this leaves makes it perfect Tale fodder.
EDIT: +1
Djoric, you need to write stuff like this more often. +1
I can dig the hell out of this. +1
In terms of tone and the perpendicular logic this place runs on, I am mightily reminded of OFF.
dig
Was that a fucking pun?
if your reading this your gay
If it was, it's a personal favourite of mine.
(Oh and +1, this instantly conjured up images of MMOs/RPGs for me, which was a good thing)
Kobolds.
That's all I'm getting right now. Kobolds.
…
I know, I'm grasping at straws here. Yet, this is so cool! Particularly the fact that this is a self sustaining micro-civilization made around a single anomalous item-hemisphere and some corpses. Any markings in its surface? What material is it made of? Have we studied it at all, asides from its material composition? Have we tried putting a camera in one of the deactivated -1s? Also:
Cease asking questions that cannot be answered.
Cannot, as in "We have no answer", cannot as in "There is no reason to answer", or cannot as in "That thing that eats the stuff? Well, it's there, and there are certain questions that cannot be answered, so, you know, stop asking them? Pretty please?"
Also, @Djoric: At this rate, in 10 nights you will have your 300. But we can pretend you reached them already. Trust me, I'm Doctor ReaGUNSHOT
In order of asking:
None beyond some pitting and warping from age and use, cast iron, I had considered a log where a camera was lowered down -A but that really reeked of "OH NOES TEH SPOOPY EXPLORATION LOG OF VAGUE DANGER" and that was an old-school cliche I didn't want to visit, and cannot in the "There is no reason to answer" sense.
"OH NOES TEH SPOOPY EXPLORATION LOG OF VAGUE DANGER"
Heh, point taken. Although it would be interesting to find out it's just a complicated ore mill that works without any noise or vibration, or even a furnace that expels no smoke, thus destroying all equipment you put into it. Why? Because it processes it all in a pocket dimension/alternate magical world/workshop of the gods/the refinery that the Factory uses to get its processed resources, which also keeps sending the replacement materials.
Or something.
… grasping at straws here. I guess it comes with the territory when reading SCPs and filling the gaps. It might just be a self sustaining mining station that was meant as the perfect replacement for human miners (a difficult, dangerous and generally terrible job) and somehow stopped working as intended, becoming a sort-of-sentient clone factory that only cares about its self-preservation. I wouldn't be surprised if, underneath -A there was a bunch of tubes that processed the obtained material and dumped it back to the tunnels in ore form, thus perpetuating the process, because -A decided that, if it run out if ore to extract, its existence would bear no meaning.
Dammit, I'm doing it again. Sorry. : (
Anyways, a great story. : )
