SCP Foundation Heritage List - Voting Begins for Inaugural 2013 Class

SCP Foundation Heritage List

The SCP Foundation Heritage List is an official "Hall of Fame" of articles that are considered both culturally significant and easily identifiable. Addition to the Heritage List recognizes the following:

1. That the article has a significant presence both on the SCP Foundation main list and on the SCP Foundation fandom.
2. That the article has existed on the SCP Foundation wiki for a long enough period of time, and has been popular and highly regarded enough during that period of time, that it can be considered an iconic article.
3. That due to the first and second factors, the article in its current state is now solidly identified with that particular SCP number enough that the loss of that article and the slot's replacement with a different one would be confusing enough to the fanbase to be detrimental to their enjoyment.

For these reasons, SCP articles added to the Heritage List enjoy the following official protections.

1. Any attempts to make significant changes or rewrites to the article must go through an admin (not just a moderator). Small changes like grammatical or structure errors may be fixed by moderator or author decision as is normal.
2. Should the article fall below the deletion threshold, the article must go through at least one round of rewrites (overseen by an administrator as per protection 1) before the deletion is carried out.
3. Should the article remain under the deletion threshold after appropriate rewrites are made, the article will be archived, and the slot will be removed from the main list. No new articles will be allowed to take that slot: even if the article doesn't fit the current tone and standards of the Foundation, it is significant enough culturally that its article number will not be re-used. Think of this in the same light as a team retiring the jersey number of a famous player: the number is now forever identified with a particular identity, and should not be compromised.

Finally, articles added to the Heritage List are identified in the following manner:

1. A "heritage" tag will be added to the article's tags.
2. A small and unobtrusive "Heritage List" icon will be placed next to the article's voting module.
3. The article will be added to a "Heritage List" page. Unlike the normal SCP Foundation main list, each article will be introduced with a short blurb explaining its cultural significance and giving any caveats to new writers if the article does not fit the current tone or should not be emulated.

The inaugural 2013 class of the SCP Foundation Heritage List will consist of 14 articles to be determined as follows:

1. In order to fulfill the longevity requirement, only articles originally written in the years 2008 and 2009 will be eligible for addition to the list.
2. There are two articles that fulfill the longevity requirement that are significantly more highly rated than the others: SCP-173 and SCP-087. These two articles will automatically be included in the inaugural Heritage List.
3. Site Administration will get to choose 3 articles, as "Heritage List Admin's Choice." Administration will meet and determine how they will make their selection.
4. Site Moderation will get to choose 6 articles. Again, Site Moderators will be given free reign on how they will make their selection. An Administrator will help oversee the process in order to make sure that the selection is done fairly, but will not otherwise interfere.
5. Senior Staff will get to choose 9 articles. Again, it is up to the Senior Staff as a whole how they will make their selections. Again, Administration and Moderation will be on hand to oversee the process and make sure the selection is done fairly, but will not otherwise interfere with the process.
6. Finally, all SCP Foundation articles from the eligible years that are rated +100 or better will be placed on an outside polling site for general vote. The vote will be open for a two-week period of time, and announcements will be made on the main wiki as well as popular fan-sites.

After all votes are completed, the final Inaugural Heritage List will be chosen in the following manner:

1. All three Administration choices will be added to the Heritage List.
2. Out of the six candidates, the top three Moderator choices that are not repeated in the Administration choices will also be added to the Heritage List.
3. Out of the nine candidates, the top three Senior Staff choices that are not repeated in the Moderator or Administration choices will also be added to the Heritage List.
4. Finally, out of all 95 candidates, the top three Popular Vote choices that are not repeated in the Administration, Moderator, or Senior Staff choices will also be added to the Heritage List.
5. SCP-173 and SCP-087 will automatically be included in the list.

This will leave us with an inaugural Heritage List of 14 articles.

Yay! Finally nice to have an official acknowledgement of our most famous articles without breaking our "there is no canon" mindset.

I want to vote for SCP-420-J SCP-450, but I'll look through some more before I vote.

I hope people vote for ones other than the super-famous ones (106, 914, 682, etc.), as those will probably be voted in by SS anyhow. 450 needs some love!

I love 450 and I'll choose it if I get another visit from the vote fairy. For now I went with 136 for 2 reasons; it's more disquieting and it's more fleshed out. (I also love the Hanged King, so I really need 3 votes)

I was extremely indecisive about this. With the amount of articles that could be voted for, I really wish we could have three choices.
I decided that I trusted Senior Staff would select the higher rated ones, and chose The Cargo Ship.

So, we only get to vote on one article for the list? Also, are the Staff allowed to choose articles below +100? I really, really feel that SCP-579 is among the most worthy of being on the list, precisely because it's below +100. The extremely controversial nature of it is what makes it such an important part of site culture.

I would argue that we should also promote Skips that newbies can look up to in terms of our current standards. I appreciated the narrative with the Cargo Ship, not the expungement, which I believe is important in an SCP. Yeah, the expungement in 579 leaves a lot to be imagined, but I wouldn't want to see a lot of those kinda of articles around here.¹

Per user feedback, Scantron and I are looking into retooling the survey to allow multiple votes. If so, we will reboot the voting and allow everyone to recast their votes.

I recommend allowing people either 3 votes or 12 votes. 3 because that's how many the general public gets to vote in…and 12 for the same reason mods get 6 and senior staff get 9. Obviously the members SHOULD vote more than a few specific options, but the possibility always exists that they might not!

When I first read those rules I thought the mods would choose 6 all-together and SS 9 (because they are more numerous) and the administration 3. Now I'm not sure if it's for each person?

Let me clarify.

Administration will pick 3.

Moderators will pick 6. If any of their top three choices overlap with Admin's 3 choices, we'll go to the next one down the list.

Senior Staff will pick 9. If any of their top six choices overlap with Administration and Moderation, we'll go to the next down the list.

General Audience will vote on the entire set. The top three choices that don't overlap with the nine already chosen will be picked.

And what I was noting is that although it'd be EXTREMELY unlikely, the possibility would exist for the general membership to only vote for 9 articles or less, all of which might have already been voted in by the staff. Thus letting them vote for up to 12 each may be the best course of action. But letting them pick 3 each might be good enough to get the variety necessary.

Suggestion: Possibly have the Staff vote before the users do?

Since the staff is mostly picking the famous articles, and presumably the users are too, I'm worried that a few obscure ones with only a handful of votes will be inaugurated on the popular list because the big name ones had already been chosen by Staff.

I agree the more votes you give, the more statistically representative the results will be. But in case every one choose the same ones, there's nothing that says we absolutely need to have exactly 14. If only a total of 10 are deemed worthy then that's fine too.

I don't like it so, so much, more than anything else from this whole idea. Why can't the protected article just stay in the main slot, and its rating be ignored? It basically achieves the same result as the currently proposed actions, but without the added confusion of arcing the page and without any gaping holes in the main list afterwards.

Of course, the possibility of something like 093 or 354 reaching negatives is basically non-existent, so I'll just come back to hate on this if it ever actually happens.

Also, I put on my mad oracle hat and predict that the public vote will turn into a popularity contest with any "cultural significance" nowhere to be found. My first impulse after opening the survey page was to vote for either 028 or 017, because they're both excellent articles and are among my all-time favorites. But cultural significance? Compared to something like 087 they might as well have none. And most people won't make a distinction between "something I like" and "something that's important to the site's culture".

In fact, I'm not 100% sure that there are as many as 14 articles that are both 4+ years old and culturally significant, as opposed to just very good. So I'm terribly curious about how the SS vote will turn out.

I said as much when the idea was first brought up, and I'm glad that someone else thinks so. Honestly, I'd much prefer that voting be entirely ignored on a heritage article, myself.

Also true. Looking over the current nomination lists (both here and elsewhere), almost none of the ones that you see a gazillion fanart and fanfiction pieces about are being selected. This pretty much violates point #3 of the definition of a heritage article, which brings to question just how out-of-touch the people voting are with the greater off-site fanbase.

But what part of the fanbase is this directed towards? Just the core of experienced authors or anyone who identifies with or likes the Foundation? There's quite a large spread of fans and they have vastly different opinions; a popularity contest between only the people who are site members will be incredibly skewed unless that's exactly what the administration is shooting for.

Now this sounds awesome! Just thinking about it, I picture some sort of award ceremony with Clef and 173 (who's wearing a light blue dress with a floral pattern for some reason,) as the hosts, calling down SCPs who give amusing acceptance speeches while accepting the award trophies which I can't exactly picture. I suppose they'd probably be golden but I just can't imagine what they'd be shaped as. Hopefully someone writes a tale about it, in a style similar to that tale about the Anomalympics. Lord knows I couldn't.

But regardless of how that goes, I'm almost certainly voting for SCP-027. It is without a doubt the one I find to be the best SCP in every way, and the one that's the most culturally significant IMO.

And seriously, what would those award trophies look like?

Liking it is fine, but what on earth makes 027 "culturally significant"? Have you ever seen fanfiction or fanart directed towards it? Have you ever seen it mentioned off-site? Have you ever talked to other SCP fans and found that a significant number of them find that it is their favorite as well?

Culturally significant:

1. An article that has inspired the creation of other articles, stories, or other projects such as artwork or games, both on and off site.
2. An article that has influenced the way people write articles or the type of articles that people write.
3. An article that is so popular/notorious that you can refer to it by number and 90% of members(and even many non-members) will know which article that is without having to look it up.
4. An article that has introduced a concept(such as a new GOI) that becomes ingrained into SCP lore.
5. An article that stands strong as an example of the "right" way to write an SCP, a good example for others to follow.

I can't think of many other criteria that would really work to define something as "significant".

And I can't see how SCP-027 fulfills any of those criteria :P except MAYBE #5, but that's up for debate.

I don't understand why this is a qualifier. This seems like a somewhat arbitrary choice that will exclude future candidates once they reach a certain age. From my experience association with an item number has decreased more and more each year, especially because of the .sea function of chat bots and the movement away from incident log formats for tales (ex: "12:32:43: SCP-682 escapes containment" to "I looked up and saw the beast staring down at me").

The Heritage List isn't for the benefit of on-site members alone, and even then there are plenty of people who don't hang around in IRC. The SCPs that belong on this list are the ones that are linked to from off-site and, again, would be detrimental to the entire fanbase (not just site membership) if it were removed.

I'm voting for the pan-dimensional vending machine, not simply because it's very good, but because the sheer imagination and diversity of the items it vends personifies the almost unlimited potential of the foundation - which, for me, is what makes this such an engaging site.
