I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Why I write here, at the SCP wiki. It's kind of wrapped up in a second question of, Who am I writing for?
Most of this question stems from seeing people in various offsite places picking the Foundation apart, how we couldn't exist, how the wackiness is awful, how some of the SCPs (eyes 231 and 067) shouldn't be popular because…whatever. And so I found myslef pondering, WHY we do this. And found out I could only speak for me.
I do this for fun. I enjoy writing in the SCP universe. I love the 'no canon' set up, where you can ignore anything you don't like. If I want to use an SCP and destroy it, I can, without having to alter the main SCP, or making it so no one else can use it. I love the way it goes from serious to humorous. Honestly, I still like a little bit of lolfoundation here. In my mind, lolfoundation was never really a problem, the problem was people doing the EXACT SAME lolfoundation, EVERYWHERE. When every article threatens keter duty, it loses the effect.
I love that we have so much room for every type of writing. Yes, we started with horror, but it's grown to be so much more then that, in the skips as well as the tales. We have things that could destroy not just this world, but the universe… and we have a toaster that makes you think you're it.
I don't care if an article is perfect, especially not when it comes to science. This is fantasy, not in any manner real, it doesn't matter if something wouldn't work int he real world, this isn't the real world, we don't need to be realistic.
And as to who I write for… honestly? For my friends. The other people who love this world, who read the articles, read the tales, and enjoy the full range of history here. We're just some people who wound up together, and we're writing some AMAZING stuff. We've grown a lot over the years. (After the mass edit, I didn't think we'd ever get 1000 good SCPs, let alone be nearing 2000…) We're still growing. We're inclusive. We try to help people, even if not all of us are good teachers… and not everyone can write an SCP.
I'm not writing this for the internet at large. I honestly don't care if some random dick on the internet doesn't like my writing. I'm not writing it for the mass public. I'm writing it for my friends, the people who read the site, and the forums, and who will read one of my articles, and post in the comments 'Oh fuck, but that means…' I'm shocked that people want to use our writing to create video games movies, and whatever else. I'm kinda skeeved out that other people are playing a character I created…
Side rant: I hate the term Author Avatar, even though I use it. Dr. Bright isn't me. It's just the name I put in for my user name, and that shares a name with a character I created. But he's not my voice in the SCP Foundation. If I needed one of those, I'd use TCM. He's a character, oen I'd actually used before, in name and temperament, if not in actual physicality.
Well, that's why I write here, plus a little more. So, why do YOU write here?
