You would not BELIEVE the god-awful mainlist titles I tried to shoehorn on to this. Thank goodness I decided to not go for something cutesy.

Anyhoo, this SCP is dedicated to everyone who enjoys or performs classical music. Keep an ear out for that dead instrument!

I'm not sure the quotes are necessary here. I mean, is it musicality, except not musicality? Or is it being directly quoted from someone?

Tests using human beings, apes, canines, cetaceans, bees and plants

This seems like an oddly specific list. What, do cats not count? Why bees, but not grasshoppers?I understand human beings and apes, but why cetaceans? Why plants?

Other than that, there's very little that grabs me? I think it may just be an issue that I may not have enough sleep in me to appreciate this.

I put "musicality" in quotes because it's not really a scientific term, but what else would you call the effect?

As for the list of organisms, I was trying to go for a representative cross-section of things that have been proven to respond both positively and negatively to music, and different forms of music. And yes, I think I recall seeing some studies that show that houseplant growth rates actually do vary with statistical significance depending on whether they're grown in silent environments, environments with classical music (I think it was Bach?), and environments with rock/heavy metal.

A more technical description might be something along the lines of "Any musical instrument that is played with or in the immediate presence of SCP-1687 has its sound altered by a thus far unidentified mechanism. Any attempts to play…"
If the sound produced by affected instruments is acoustically identical to non-affected instruments, does the violin change the sound (or affect some non-acoustic property), or just the perception of that instrument's sound?
Also, is the quality-draining effect on other instruments permanent?
I'm not sure about the plant testing. Yes, plants are supposed to react differently to Bach than to heavy metal, but that's likely a result of the physical effect of the sound waves themselves, not an inherent quality of the type of music, so if this thing doesn't affect the sound waves themselves, it should have the same effect on a plant that a normal instrument would.

Those certainly are good questions. ;-)

Keep in mind that although detection equipment says that the waveforms are identical, it's specifically mentioned that plants react to it as if it were white noise. I.e. if you played the violin as part of a heavy metal band, the electric guitars, bass guitars and drums would all go "dead" as well, and there wouldn't be the expected "heavy metal" effect on plants.

Couple things kinda stuck out to me, like the use of baseline and world-class, as well as "musicality", but other than that I loved it. There are far too little musical scips.

That was intentional. I don't know if you've read music critic reviews, but there are QUITE A LOT of pompous, pretentious reviewers who think it's their God-given duty to condescend to "the common people" in the name of "educating" them on what is and is not appropriate music/culture to enjoy. This reviewer is one of those.

The review made me want to punch the guy who wrote it, right in the face.

So for me, it's a good imitation of actual music reviews.
