Okay. Clearly setting up something big (i.e. the part of this cannon after the contest ends), but Ganymede doesn't seem all that significant. Independent Foundation sites? Where's the significance? And do even you know why Lament is doing all this?
Clearly setting up something big (i.e. the part of this cannon after the contest ends)
Yup, we have a lot of material. We also wanted to set up a framework for people (who aren't the four of us) to write in after the contest voting period ends and all the canons open up.
but Ganymede doesn't seem all that significant.
Google "Ganymede" and you might get some hints. (THAT part is just us & our planning, not the framework for others to write in.)
In the story, though, a large part of the significance is, well, what the Ganymede Protocol is, and the effects that will have on the Foundation.
And do even you know why Lament is doing all this?
Yup. :D
Do you have any way for the rest of us who aren't you to know this stuff? It seems like you've worked in a whole complex backstory that no one knows other than you guys, and made it so that much of what goes on makes no sense without that backstory.
Sure, splitting the Foundation is cool and all, and clearly intended to help the situation, but how does it help? Sure, the revelation that it's Lament who's behind all this is cool and all (sort of, I don't remember who Lament actually is outside of this), but his reasoning is a complete mystery to anyone outside your group. These are important questions, ones that must be addressed to make a substantial contribution to this canon, a story beyond "Things were all apocalyptic and stuff", but ones that currently only you are capable of answering.
Also, Ganymede should have been becoming Catholicism so your canon could be a prequel to ours.
I take your point… people can't really write Lament easily, unless they're really good at figuring out everything that's happening… but Lament is meant to be offscreen for much of the series.
Splitting the Foundation… there is definitely a reason, with multiple facets, the most obvious of which is that the O5s were taken over by 343 & the current Administrator is isolationist and the first Administrator wants to actually end the world. That kind of clash… Well. And Lament knows more about that than anyone else.
In the interest of not posting up too many walls of text, I won't go into more detail at the moment. The individual sites? They have no clue. None of them. The Administrator knows some stuff, and Light (who's AWOL from the Foundation for now) will soon find out some stuff, but nobody else…
Meaning that people don't need to know the why to be able to write stuff at the Sites. In-character, they should be in the dark, while the world ends around them, and they have to deal with it. And they can bring in more world-enders. And more developments in the world, even the wider world reacting to the ends of the world.
Also, Ganymede should have been becoming Catholicism so your canon could be a prequel to ours.
I lol'ed XD

You know it in your heart to be true.
I actually once ran a mafia game like this. There was some ill-specified event which killed nearly everyone. But each survivor perceived it differently, and had evidence to back it up. That was an interesting setting.
So, my personal headcanon has this being the precursor to the Church of the doctors.

I said a lot of stuff about this in chat, but I can't wait for the rest of your guys' pieces. That AWCY mountain range is too perfect.

Holy shit. I know little to nothing about what is going on, I'm having to look up SCPs as I go, and I know I'm missing 99% of the subtleties, but damn if this isn't a bloody engaging read.
Thus has officially become my favorite Canon if the contest, win it.
I wanna know mooooooooar
if your reading this your gay
After reading "Apakht", I was worried that this canon would go the way of the Lost (hehe), capturing the reader with lots of questions and then not answering most of them. But I'm actually happy with this as a temporary ending, until the end of the contest. It answers just enough questions, and awesomely enough, to not leave me disappointed and to provide at least some sense of closure, while leaving enough of them unanswered to make me anxious to read more.
Just for keeping score, the following questions aren't answered yet:
- How did Lament became the Harbinger? What's his motivation in all of this?
- Who are "they" he mentions in "Apakht" as the ones who came up with the name?
- How did Mirski knew that Harbinger would come, and where did she get the harpoon gun from?
- What is Apakht? I assume that Lament's line about it being "the End" was metaphorical, because to find out that it's literally a word that translates as "the End" would be very disappointing.
- What was the "twinge of memory" that Yahweh had in The Gate Opens about? Was it just a preview of the conflicting memories he'll gain in Revelation, or something more ominous?
- Which version of Yahweh's memories are the true one? Is he really God, or just a reality warper who thought himself one for so long that he forgot the truth?
- Who the new Administrator is? I thought that she is this canon's version of Future!Light at first, but the revelation that Future!Light is O5-2 contradicts this, unless there is more than two of her.
- Finally, what is Clef? Angel!682 obviously knew it, so I'm expecting the answer to be revealed at some point.
I think that's all the major ones. Anyway. Looking forward to reading the post-contest entries to this canon.
Brilliant. These are many of the questions I wanted the reader to ask! :D
I know you're not asking for answers, but I'm gonna address some of 'em anyway.
How did Lament became the Harbinger? What's his motivation in all of this?
Who are "they" he mentions in "Apakht" as the ones who came up with the name?
I know the answer to both, but I'm not certain how quickly to reveal it. Light's next scene in the Library will reveal some of it. I'm not 100% sure how much, because the scene hasn't been written yet. Who "they" are is a pretty big one - I know the answer, and, hell, it's technically even guessable, but I'm not sure yet where to place the reveal. If we do it earlier, that means other people have even more stuff to play with in our canon. If we do it later, then it might have more impact. There are other factors in play, too… Gah. Writing is HARD.
What is Apakht? I assume that Lament's line about it being "the End" was metaphorical, because to find out that it's literally a word that translates as "the End" would be very disappointing.
It is not literally a word that translates as "the End".
Who the new Administrator is? I thought that she is this canon's version of Future!Light at first, but the revelation that Future!Light is O5-2 contradicts this, unless there is more than two of her.
The new Administrator is an entirely new character. Being a black woman, there aren't exactly that many previously established characters she could be. (She's not any version of Light.) She could be at least one SCP… but she's not. She's baseline human, minus the alterations made to her when she became the Administrator. So… in this case, while there's a story there, there's no (planned) secret identity reveal waiting in the wings. This character is also designed to be used by other writers, so her backstory isn't 100% set in stone.
Finally, what is Clef? Angel!682 obviously knew it, so I'm expecting the answer to be revealed at some point.
I'm not sure if I should answer! I'm not even 100% sure I'm going to follow up on that. Clef is meant to be enigmatic and genre-savvy. I have some ideas here, but I might also leave him just Mysterious. I hope that doesn't make this too much like Lost! :( (hahaha)
Also keep in mind that other authors can write Clef in this canon, and since I don't have a solid plan already (unlike with Lament), they might take him in a different direction before I decide on something, and that's okay.
Back to non-spoilers:
Also, belated credit to Dexanote for coming up with the specifics of the Ganymede Protocol: originally we just had a vague idea of 'schisms in the Foundation' and were casting about for a way to make it work - and then he just busted out what were basically the tale's final lines. That also had the advantage of making certain things clear in the Harbinger backstory (zomg teh spoilers), so it worked out awesome all-around.
As you can see, I love this complicated plot shit. I'm hoping that knowing the answers to all these questions won't be necessary for people to write more entries to our canon. When our hub page goes up, we'll specify exactly which things you should ask us about, and which you can just go crazy with. Hopefully that works out!
TAKE MY UPVOTES AND WRITE MORE, DAMMIT.
… Please?
