Mackenzie's Random Statistics

I'm making this thread as a convenient place to put all of the random numbers that Nala generates due to requests from staff or general chat for random statistical information.

Today is Tuesday September 18, 2012 at 15:50 Mountain Time

There are currently 1,677 SCPs, of which 1,374 were written by contributors with more than one contribution. That means there are 303 "one hit wonders", or 18.07% of the entire body of SCPs.

There are currently 798 Tales, of which 750 were written by contributors with more than one contribution. That means there are 48 "one hit wonders", or 6.02% of the entire body of Tales.

Out of 549 contributors, 265 have made more than one contribution, meaning 284 have only made one contribution.

Mackenzie, your math is fail! 303 plus 48 is obviously not 284!

Indeed it isn't. This discrepancy comes from contributions by Anonymous and (Account Deleted), which unfortunately throws off some of the calculations.

that is a very interesting statistic of its own actually. that means we have 67 authors who wrote one thing and then deleted their accounts.

Oh, I wrote those 67 articles. I'm just really indecisive with my account name so.. I.. uhh.. make lots of accounts. Then delete them.

That is the hope. Nala 3.0 will be a part of Project Foundation and therefore have access to incredible amounts of data.

Holy hell, Mackenzie, what on earth are all these crazy numbers?

As everyone knows by now, Nala has been making backups of the entire Wikidot database since January of this year. This table shows the size of the database for each of the given dates, as well as the velocity (number of pages per day) at which it grew during each period. The running velocity is the average over the entire period since backups began.

That means that, since the beginning of this year, the community has posted an average of 1.87 new SCPs per day and 1.48 new Tales per day.

But what does it mean?

I'm no statistician, but there's a couple of interesting trends I picked out.

• The number of new pages spiked considerably between April and June, presumably as people got out of school.
• The number of new pages tanked hard after August, presumably as people went back to school.

Well when you consider Tempest Night, the two extended narratives (spy drama and the MC&D investment bankers, and Lord freakin' Blackwood, it's not so hard for me to believe…

Oh, I'm well aware. I'm more noting that the volume of tale writing has been really visibly high over the past year or so- all of the things I mentioned were prolific multipart pieces, and they were just a few examples off the top of my head.

This is pretty awesome; just the sheer number of SCPs and Tales we have is….yeah, just awesome. Interesting how 82% of the SCPs were written by repeat authors.

I really do need to pull myself outta the one-hit-wonder category and finish up those Barbers, though.
