I've been kicking this idea around in my head for a while, but haven't decided if it's worth writing up. In some relatively uninhabited area, the Foundation finds an SCP consisting of:
1. A powerful telescope
2. A power source
3. A computer that processes incoming information from the telescope
4. A chamber that one can look into, but not open in any obvious way
The technology is non-human and has been there for thousands of years. The telescope is systematically scanning a distant area of the galaxy, and one can see what it is "looking" at in the chamber. Mostly, you see empty space, but every so often it locks on to something "interesting" for a while…but then it keeps going.
My backstory is that it is an alien travel/teleportation device. Something visited Earth, and set this thing up for easier/faster travel back and forth. But whatever was on the other end got destroyed, and now the device is on automatic, systematically looking for signs of its creators.
The Foundation probably should destroy it, but of course instead they've set up a containment site to keep people away from it, and watch to see if anything comes through.
