I like the idea of body snatching mushrooms, but the life draining thing is kind of out of relation for me. When it's dead, it's dead, playing with stiff food is kind of an unnatural behavior of survival, unless we're talking about transportation purposes and not as means of blending in. Now when I think of it, it almost sounds like a sentient colony viruses like in most zombie flicks. Does it really have to be a fungus?
Cordyceps, MMMmmmm~
Oh! the host is still alive, good, good, now it sounds more like of an angler fish system of predation. All of a sudden, the tables have turned and I like the idea.
i can relate that to my siren concept

Though, does it really have to be a fungus?
It maybe just me, because I hate fungi related mediums of biohazard horror.
can we get into some side effects? like at early stages, when the fungus is not yet evident, the host can see false colors or something? as an effect to what substance the fungus is sublimely sucking from the host?
