Excellent narrative technique, and very effective overall. "Forcing" in the second paragraph ought to be "forced", though.

This isn't the strongest concept, and therefore leans heavily on style, but it does it well, and therefore, upvoted by me. Nicely done.

Tiny YMMV nitpick / suggestion. I would change

to

But it was not human

or some variant of the above. Coz 'alien' doesn't necessarily imply 'wouldn't silently thank its captors'.

Still works without any change there, though.

I like it as alien, as it's apparent to mean 'alien to the concept of gratitude'.
Unless you assumed alien as 'extraterrestrial', which as far as I know, is not the only meaning.

And since we're on that, 'non human' doesn't necessarily imply ''wouldn't silently thank its captors', have you seen the non-human things the Foundation's got?
A lot of those non-human things could and would silently thank whoever rescued them =P
