if i never shower again, you have only yourself to blame
That list of acquisitions disturbs me. Tryptophan, phenylalanine, cadavers, and coffee creamer?
SCP Wiki Administrator | Earth: We're all in this together.
I actually like this and the picture is a little creepy even though it just looks like a jack o lantern photo-shopped behind glass. This could work.
But it needs a rewrite for tone and simplicity, certain ideas are covered to the point of redundancy such as 10% of the body in view, IN-SUR-MOUNT-ABLE HORROR, the nonsense about producing horror by influencing the brain but not psychically (what is the difference, srsly) and a particularly clumsy 148 reference. A 148 visor should work about as well as a stainless steel visor.
Suggestion: program a bot to go up to an affected door, open it, and a) snap a few pictures (I know it disables remote feeds, but what about imagers that don't feed anywhere, just record?), or b) mount a gun with tranquilizer darts, and shoot it. Maybe even have the robot see via ultrasound, or something, so we get around the vision part.
That said, it reminds me a bit of the Shy Guy, in that you must not see it, only here it won't let you.
It's supposed to be able to more or less just disable any type of electronic device that is close to it. I may edit the article to reflect that.
Also, I thought of a way that it could be contained, so I may change the article so that it is.
What about a hybrot or organic machine? Or simply disable the fear receptors in a D-class and send him searching.
"Disable the fear receptors"? What, now? *confused*
high dosages of anti anxiety drugs like SSRIs might do the trick. especially since SCP-303 taps into a biological response to induce fear, so elevated serotonin level suppressing the sympathetic nervous system could manage to keep a effected person calm. though SCP-303 may already be ahead of us on this as tryptophan is heavily related to serotonin and tyrosine is a common anti anxiety drug. could it be that SCP-303 feed on the chemicals that keep us calm?
Yes, I know I'm necroposting. Actually I'm necroposting on a response to a necropost of a necropost. But I have some things to say that may interest people today so I'm gonna say it. Real life MD/PhD neuroscientist here, specifically molecular biology of stress and the serotonin system. There is no dose of an SSRI (or SNRI), or non-selective SRI/NRI that will produce a large enough effect ot come close. They just don't attenuate severe acute stimulus driven fear enough. You might be able to do it with a benzodiazepine, but you'd probably be close to unconscious if not unconscious . You wouldn't remember much if anything that's for sure.
Three words: bilateral amygdala lesions.
Bilateral amygdala lesions decease (if partial) or eliminate )(if complete) the ability to experience fear. Complete bilateral congenital absence of the amygdala results in essentially compete absence of fear. Wired article was that too light? How about this:
One major exception CO2 inhalation will still produce panic even without amygdale, sometimes causing people to experience fear for the first time in their lives. (disclosure, I got my degrees where this work was done and have some professional connections with a couple of the authors)
On tryptophan and the othet aromatic amino acids
Tryptophan is the ammo acid that serotonin and melatonin are made from, just as tyrosine is the amino acid that norepinephrine, dopamine, and epinephrine and melanin) are made from. Humans can synthesize tryrosine from phenylalanine but phenylalanine and tryptophan must be obtained fron the diet. The casein in (the inaptly named) non-diary creamer is high in all 3 of these amino acids.
The list of materials sounds…ominous. Generator, cryotube, surgical equipment, corpses, various chemicals, *and* (Non-dairy?) powdered coffee creamer?
Also, inducing a primal fear non-psychically isn't that hard…it's just something that the little lizard that's in all of us finds pants-shittingly terrifying. An extreme phobia that's a holdover from when we were still flinging poop at each other from the treetops. Nothing psychic about a person's fear of spiders, for instance, the only difference being *everybody* (apparently) is afraid of this critter.
Maybe there's some folks who aren't, and they just haven't been found yet.
I guess me as a reader is not one of those people. I get why other people find this little guy frightening but I have a hard time believing he can be Super Duper Scary sans psychic component. I wouldn't even count myself as a particularly brave person. I just have no bricks to shit here.
But I stand by my comments on 148 — 148 is not transparent. There are no 148 visors.
This is what I was trying to get at in the article, and I may change things around to make it more apparent. The idea is that he's tapping into primal fears that everyone possesses by default, some genetic artifact intrinsic in people that triggers the fear response. The deeper implication being that there really is a reason to be afraid of him, it is written into our very genome that this thing should be avoided.
And when I referred to 148 visors I actually meant solid, opaque helmets that do not allow you to see through them. The point to wearing them being to see if you can limit the fear response by having 148/not being able to see/not being able to hear him.
Again, I intend to edit the article pretty soon, though, so I can change any of this around.
Oh god. That's just… that's just terrifying. I hate the sound of wheezing. I hate bony people. And I know someone who hallucinates rarely people with jack-o-lanterns for heads. Good god.
If I could upvote fourteen times, I would.
This thing is probably not very good for Site ██ morale. +1'd.
Expanding on the "bot" idea for a photo… why don't we use a FILM camera? Digital is much easier to use, but film SLR cameras are high enough quality that it may work.
Unless 303 shorts out the bot.
Is this related in any way to 092? like, same basic description (tall bony genderless thing who has huge-ass teeth/mouth) only they're opposite.
092 you can look at everything BUT his face. He makes his face seen, but not the rest.
Also, horrified here. Seriously. Looking to see something with huge human teeth staring at me from behind something? I'm not gonna sleep tonight. Seriously, I won't.
I wonder if cain or able would care to try this thing and open the door.
Or 682- 682 fears nothing! With the exception of 173
