So, Here's the general Idea:

The Inquisition (If you have a better name, tell me) is a group of unidentified individuals who work for the Vatican for the purposes of counteracting paranormal threats to the Holy Church and Christendom. Individuals within the Organization are referred to as inquisitors. The Inquisition is held together by a magitech have construct called 'The Unimatrix' (if you have a better name, tell me). This serves as a way for inquisitors to contact each other, share information, etc. The Inquisition obviously makes use of paranormal and anomalous phenomena, but it's generally behind the scenes stuff.

Before you write this off as a copy of WH 40k, please here me out.

This organisation isn't composed of it's own members. It's composed of people in other GoIs. So an unusually competent UIU agent could be an inquisitor in disguise. And that site director who's really interested in that one satanic SCP could be sizing it up for eventual termination by his bud (and fellow inquisitor) in the exorcist division.

I feel something like that would make a pretty cool story.

So, tell me what you think.

Obviously within the Foundation-verse, this could involve use of anomalies, but the Inquisition is very real, and the previous pope emeritus (Benedict XVI) was actually prefect of said congregation prior to being elected pope.

What I was implying is that using "The Inquisition" as a GoI can work, as long as you also realize there's a real-life analogue that may either give you restrictions or ideas.

As with any GoI, you need a few things: Why it exists, who comprises it, and what their mission is.

As for inquisitors being members of other GoI's: I think that could be either very good or very bad, depending what direction you take it. If everyone is suddenly an inquisitor, or somehow every high ranking Foundation person is secretly an inquisitor, I think that loses some effect.

Also keep in mind, that if you're going to assume that people within the foundation could potentially be double-agents, that's got a lot of implications regarding vetting for highe rlevel positions.

Really in this setting the Holy Office probably ought to be acting as part of the Horizon Initiative and/or the GOC (since the Vatican is sovereign) when it deals with religious doctrine of an anomalous nature, or simply perhaps be acting in its official capacity as a curia. Making them a separate GOI has far too much overlap with the existing organizations.

I could see it working. Trouble is it could shatter many organizations like the Foundation or UIU so for this to work, it could be a very small GoI.

I could imagine their sort of alliances/enemies be like this:

Allies

• GOC (As they also destroy paranormal stuff)
• Nobody? (As he/she/it is very mysterious)
• Horizon Initiative (As they also destroy stuff or work with SCPs)
• MCF (Because they achieve one of the churches goals - Charity and help)

Enemies

• Foundation (Containing the items rather than destroying them)
• Fifth Church/Sarkic Cults/ The serpent's hand/ORIA/The Church of the Broken God/ The Black Queen (As they are followers of a different church)
• UIU (As they work more or less alongside the Foundation)
• Chaos Insurgency (For their inhumane ways and more aggressive nature towards SCPs)
• Anderson's Robotics/Doctor Wondertainment/GAW/AWCY (As they make SCPs all the time)
• MC&D (For selling paranormal items)

To clarify: The Inquisition is perfectly fine with the existance and expierimentation/use of anomalies, as long as anomalies, or groups using these anomalies don't pose a threat to the Holy Church and Chrsitendom (or are satanic. Then they're gone). That's why they'd probably be able to make it really high into Foundation leadership, because the Foundation has okay relations with the Vatican, and an Inquisitors in the Foundation wouldn't have a need to act contrary to the foundation.

In addition, I'm thinking of inquisitors being few and far between, but having some serious paratech¹ to back them up. Also, they'll be pretty fanatical, and probably take a pill before spilling information.

Priests with suicide pills seems to be heretical, which for the curia charged with stamping out heresy in the priesthood seems especially hypocritical.

The Foundation, and other GoIs, are pretty good at getting people to crack, and if you talking can cause harm to them, or the Holy Church and Christendom, then you could say you were making a sacrifice. You were preventing yourself from being used in a way that could cause harm to the Holy Church and Christendom

Infosec seems more likely to be the Vatican's approach, rather than Jesuit Death Troopers.

That brings me to another question/point. My current plans means one inquisitor per dioceses.

Info sec clearances requires 2 things: a centeralized command structure, and a lot of people. The inquisition has neither.

So how would you see infused functioning.

If they aren't part of the structure of the Church they aren't actually Catholic priests. There's no such thing as Roman Catholics that aren't in communion with the Vatican, at least not by the Vatican's definitions.

What I meant to say was that there wasn't a very large chain of command. It's not like the Foundation's Beauracracy. 1 Inquisitor per dioscese is currently the plan. It is composed of people in communion with the Holy See.

There's usually an exemption for Heroic suicide. For instance, jumping on a grenade to save other soldiers is (usually) allowed. It's debatable if dying to protect information would be the same. More importantly, however, right now they're acting just like any other secret society. Not carrying suicide pills could be a distinguishing trait.

Distinguishing traits are really what a new GoI needs. I would prefer to see the Vatican as a 'retired' GoI. They were the leading European paranormal investigators between 500-1500 AD, but the reformation and other historical events weakened their power. This created the vacuum that the foundation stepped into as a successor.

In this model, the Vatican has a huge secret library, full of anomalous info and a few items it's held onto, but little to no active investigators. The Foundation would need to negotiate access to these archives, or occasionally collect a Vatican escapee. The Vatican would request records and access to items related to Christianity.

Narratively, I'd like to see this spur dialogue on positive religion in the SCP-verse. I only ever see religion in a negative light in articles¹.

This is probably going to some of a backstory. The Inquisition used to be a major GoI, but found really complicated objects. Eventually, the Church outsourced this task to secularized organisations, thus leading into the Foundation. But, the Inquisition still hangs around, and functions as the Chruch's own normalcy force when it needs it.

In this model, the Vatican has a huge secret library, full of anomalous info and a few items it's held onto, but little to no active investigators. The Foundation would need to negotiate access to these archives, or occasionally collect a Vatican escapee. The Vatican would request records and access to items related to Christianity.

This sort of describes an idea I was contemplating called the Vatican Resources Directorate. The situation you have here describes it. In addition, the Vatican supplied the foundation with a steady stream of exorcists, and information in the Disciplinia Arcani.

However, with the Inquisition, the Foundation would have some relations with the Vatican, but they would be extremely vague, and not really developed. The Inquisition would be sort of embedded in the Foundation (and other GoIs), making sure that religiously significant artifacts are taken care of, and, if necessary, transferring some objects into Vatican control.

The Inquisition will probably have immense Knowledge of the anomalous/paranormal world, due to Disciplinia Arcani, and the combined research of almost every GoI. This would give them an immense insight into thaumaturgy and other paranormal phenomena. They'd also be equipped with some serious paratech. But when it comes to operations, they'd pretty much be sleeper agents, becoming active to protect the Holy Church and Christendom.

EDIT: I think that the Vatican being mentor to the Foundation is cool, but I can't see it being applicable to this idea.

I would like to think that the Vatican (or a cell of religious people that went AWOL) would use the Inquisition to destroy anything that is anomalous as they are unnatural or ungodly to what they believe. Think about it: there is an SCP which is named "God". SCP-079 or "Able" is a being that cannot die. There is even an eldritch creature that can make people become cultists and perform many [DATA REDACTED]

There are religions based on these items or cults and I'm pretty sure the Inquisitors wouldn't be happy if these SCPs break out and would pose a threat to everything they believe in.

I understand where you're coming from, but then that basically makes them no different, and, according to my headcannon and personal opinion, shortsighted. They'll probably be very invested in destroying satanic/demonic SCPs, and will vehemently oppose making use of them, but I can't see them just destroying everything.

Some Concepts/Ideas:

Leadership: The Inquisition is lead by 7 high inquisitors. But Documents do not differentiate between high inquisitors. They simply say "The High Inquisitor," as though there was only one.

There is one Inquisitor per dioscese, and the entirety of the inquisitors under the archdioscese is refered to as a tribunal. For example, it would read "The Inquisitor of the Dioscese of Little Rock," or "The Tribunal of the Archdioscese of Galveston-Houston."

Paratech: Inquisitors will have there own paratech, which will be either self acquired, or come from the Tribunal Armory. Some more powerful pieces of paratech will have to come from the High Inquisitors.

One of the most notable pieces of paratech common to all Inquisitors, is a device linked to a Intranet. Through this intranet (itself anomalous), they are able to communicate, access records, etc. A beneficial AI may or may not operate in said intranet. Some of the Inquisitors may be preists or thaumaturges

Wanderer's Library: I could easily see the Inquisition establishing itself within the Wanderer's Library, as well as some other pocket dimensions. Given how similar the Inquisition is to the Serpent's Hand, I could see how this could be an interesting point to explore.

Allies

• The Foundation (No problems with what the Foundation is doing)
• Some GOC factions (Knights of the Templar, Reformed)
• possibly Nobody (May have a sort of backstory relating to it)
• Some of the Horizon Containment Initiative (particualrly Roman Catholic factions)
• MCF (Even though the Inquisition may not like what they are doing, they will also agree with the inentions)
• FBI, UIU (Because they are like the Foundation)

• Some GOC Factions (you know which ones)
• possibly Nobody (Nobody may be demonic)
• Serpent's Hand (they keep trying to bring out anomalies that could harm the Holy Church and Cristendom)
• CI (for obvious reasons)
• ORIA (muslims)
• Sartic Cults (probably have been trying to fight them for a long time)
• Chruch of the Broken God (Obviously)
• Fithism
• GRU "P" (because the soviets hated the church)
• May have some problems with the Oneri Collective, but not open hostilities
• The Factory, because it's ran by demons.

The Wanderers' Library is not the Serpent's Hand's base of operations. Sure, some Hand members operate out of it or squat there from time to time, but all it takes to be a member of the Hand is to consider yourself a member. The Library is much more picky about membership and affiliation, and will happily kick out anyone that it feels is unworthy of trust.

Now, here's the question that makes or breaks my whole idea with the Wanderer's Library: What qualifies as 'untrustworthy' to the library?

Ehhh. If they don't mean the Library any harm, maybe. If they seek to exploit it for their own ends, that's at least a century of those Ways being closed to that jerk.

Well, I just conceived this idea, at time of writing, yesterday. I'm still working on the specifics. I think that the tales/documents indicating the existence of the inquisition will have little to no information on the existence of the organisation. This is because the Inquisition acts similar to a virus in its temperate cycle: it just sits, and watches. Maybe even helps sometimes. But the moment it sees something that poses a threat to the Holy Church and Christendom, then they'll throw everything they can at the threat.

But, knowing you, I think you may have some points/ideas for me to capitalize on my tales.

Characters. I find it very, very hard to get invested in a work if I don't know enough about (or just dislike in general) the speaker or the central cast. Who are the characters for this?

Plot. This one should be obvious. What's going to be happening in these tales that sets them apart, to the point where it's not simple to swap in an existing GOI?

The organisation. It sort of mixes the Serpent's Hand, GOC, Horizon Containment Initiative, Nobody, and the Foundation into one GoI. But here are to distinctions I find

Members of this GoI aren't going to be just field agents. I'm going to stress paratech here¹. They're going to have access to advanced paratech, and use it in the field. Some of them may be anomalous in their own right.

If you noticed, I'm stressing the Disciplinia Arcani this was a 4th century custom that christians subscribed to, resolving not to share christian secrets with non-christians. The implications are going to be that the church have acess to highly advanced scientific, magical, and anomaly related information that was protected by the Disciplinia Arcani.

Which, IMO would make an excellent plot point.

Also, Inquisitors are perfectly free to live their lives until called upon by the Inquisition. This means that Agent Johnson in the Foundation (who is secretly an inquisitor) doesn't neccesarily go around trying to secure anomalies for the Inquisition. In fact, he may have been ordered to enter the Foundation to help it. But if the Foundation performs actions that are threatening to the Holy Church and Christendom, then he will stand up.

Ok, Zyn. I've got one.

You've probably heard of the apparitions in the apparitions in Medijogorje. They've been quite the talk in the church. Some people think they're real, and that they should be immediately canonized. But the upper levels of the church at skepticle.

Some traditionalist think that these apparitions are at best a hoax, and at worst, are Satan trying to disguise himself as the Virgin Mary to lead people astray. This claim is not without evidence. There are multiple heresies propegated by "Mary" (or whatever entity this is claiming to be Mary), and I could see the Foundation getting involved if there was considerable evidence that this was demonic. People have reported seeing demons in hotels in this city.

Now, I could, in the foundation-verse make this more than just a haunted house. Some other machination could be going on. And I could easily see the Foundation trying to get involved if it was bad enough.

But the Inquisition would have other interests.

I think you're starting to zero in on something workable here.

You might know this already, reading through your other posts, but the term Devil's Advocate comes from the semi-official title of a person who was recruited by the Catholic church to present evidence and arguments that someone was not worthy of being canonized as a saint, and/or that particular miracles were in fact a hoax, coincidence, witchcraft¹, simple wishful thinking, etc. It stands to reason that in the Foundationverse, this sort of thing would have quite a bit of complexity added, since they have to worry about "false miracles" that actually work, like SCP-1832.

I could picture a GOI format, for instance, impartially analyzing anomalous situations to discern between potential miracles, incompletely understood aspects of normal creation, and malicious or harmful things which could be described under the blanket heading of "unnatural or demonic in origin", and suggesting or documenting appropriate actions taken based on the ruling. Much like the real world Jesuits, this wouldn't necessarily be in line with the actions and positions of the Vatican.

As far as characterization goes I could see them working very well as something in the vein of the Jesuits; scholarly priests given huge amounts of leeway almost to the realm of sanctioned heresy. There are a number of interesting stories that could be told from that same modern scholar-monk perspective that has lead real world Jesuits to be some of the major contributors to modern science, even in cases where this put them at odds with church doctrine.

This is kinda what I was going for. 1 Inquisitor assigned to a diocese. Inquisitors will be either clergy (particularly exorcists) or laymen with special skills (I.E. That's one of the big questions from the believer's perspective, though. 1832 really does make a concept study for these guys, I think: He claims to be a faith healer, deriving his power from God. As you look deeper, however, it becomes clear that wherever his powers come from, they are directly tied to his own ego and sadistic urges. Additionally, they do more harm than good: his incomplete healings only prolong suffering and create false hope, and his "revelations" about the secret guilts and failings others carry are used to create emotional pain and discord. What on the surface appears to be a miracle actually starts to look more like something in deep need of a good smiting on closer examination.

I could picture these guys taking that approach to everything like him- always trying to find the thorn behind the rose, and more surpised when they don't find one than when they do.

ETA: "Deliverance Ministry" itself might be another interesting topic to have them investigate: Is this just another example of the fundamentalist movement chasing windmills? Or is it some form of memetic hazard designed to discredit them as bookburning zealots, or distract them from actual demons? Or to get even more off the wall, some forgotten minor diety of destruction and ignorance hijacking their existing zealotry to relive its glory days?

The Current name I'm going with is Septima Percunctatores Special Section Negotiis enim Arcanum Mortis that's english for Seveth Inquisitive Special Section for Arcane Affairs

As stated, above, the current schematic for this GoI is to have 1 inquisitor per dioscese. However, each inquisitor will probably have extremely practicle paratech. This would compensate for there virtual lack of numbers, and add something special to the group. In addition, some inquisitors may be thaumaturgists, reaility benders, or other anomalous entities. I could also see The Inquisition making use of atypical angles and demidieties, assuming they could be controled.

I could see 5 types of documents: artifact dossiers, personnel dossiers, operation reports, event logs, and memoranda.

The General modus operandi of this GoI will be to stay hidden and operate when relevant. So, like stated above, a Foundation agent could be an inquisitor. But, he hasn't recieved orders to act against the interests of the Foundation, if at all, so he won't.

Now, for this story, I will probably make an SCP object report describing medigourje. I would make use of some exploration logs detailing what DelISCAFor (see below) sees, and then write tales and/or event logs detailing the Inquisition's repsonse to this SCP. They will probably pull strings within the Foundation to see to it that it is destroyed, or something similar. Maybe a subplot involving a member of the Foundation who uncovers the Inquisition, which will end tragically (for him).

Under development. But this I know for sure:

The High Inquisitor: As stated above, the High Inquisitor is not an individual entity, but a common name for 7 individuals who run this GoI. They will probably refer to each other by title, instead of name. Speech in between them will be pretty nuanced, citing "His Holyness In Rome" And similar speech.

DelISCAFor (Deliverence Incorperated Special Circumstances Advanced Task Force): Part of the SCP Foundation's Special Assets Reserve. Joint task force comprised of Exorcists and Thaumatagurgists to fight demons. Sent to Medigourje first. The Inquisition is perfectly fine withwatching a deliverance task force be slaughtered before sending an Inquisitor.

I will add more when I get to them.

Ehhh. I'm not really interested in these, because I don't really have a feel for them as people. Just some stats on what they do.

Anyway, I'm very picky when it comes to tales. Best of luck with wherever this goes!

A new GoI idea is nice and all, but all the extrapolation and analysis is useless if you don't actually write an article or tale that fits the site and integrate it into the Foundation universe naturally.

Alright, I'm working on the skeleton of a general story concept. Creating document formats, trying to better flush this idea out as a GoI, but I'm missing an emblema…

I've looked up various other images, in an attempt to try and find an emblem to base something off of, and I'm lacking success. If anybody wants to lone ideas/techniques/editing software recomendations, now's the time.
