The kappa is more commonly found in Mongolia – Severus Snape, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

The weird implication is that the kappas' event might be tied to a fictional story written by humans. The reference to the Day of Flowers (from SCP-1000) hints that humanity's triumph over Bigfoot might or might not be the work of some kappas reading bedtime stories to their kin rather than anything glorious.

As for the final addendum, if we break down the wording, kappa in kanji literally means 河童 or "river-child". A child fell into a river worked just as well, I suppose.

And of all things that must come true from fiction, why an obscure line that has no plot relevance in the book/series? God has weird ways of doing things, as they say.

Hmm. I really liked the first draft of this I read, but I'm not sure how I feel about a skip being the direct result of Harry Potter. When it was just a sneaky reference line I didn't mind, but I'm iffy on it when it's this blunt. Neutral vote for now.

It was not her. The MTF checked her out. My money's that reality was bent by someone/something.. and it came out weird.

And I get that, but then why even make the connection? Why not just leave it as "I don't know guys, all these salamander men that we didn't know about just fucking teleported and I have no idea why"? I think I'd like that more.

That being said, what you have here seems to be working, so don't let me rain all over it.

My thinking is that it happened when one particular person was reading Prisoner of Azkaban, but that that person isn't a reality bender. There could be free-floating anomalies that occasionally make things happen at random when someone thinks or dreams something, and then move on.

The idea of everybody at the Foundation having a major heart-attack moment when they realize it came out of a Harry Potter book, though — that amuses the crap out of me. Of course, even without investigating they'd quickly figure out that if HP caused reality-bending effects across the board they would've found out a long time ago, but that initial realization would still be terrifying.

If I may add on, we can look at the djinn's creation in the ORIA Hub. It was done in by normal humans who convert to Islam en masse who shifted reality together (due to altered worldview) and make the djinn a thing.

This is interesting… Although what I find more intrigueing than the rest of the article is the implication that something or someone else is responsible for this…

I like this. I had absolutely no idea that this was even remotely tied to a quote from Harry Potter (which is my all-time least favorite work of fiction), and I liked it better before I read the comment about the reference, but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the article. It seems perfectly reasonable that whatever reality-bending force or person caused this was reading that phrase at the moment they caused it, or some similar coincidence—it would have to have been some particular book regardless, and HP is reasonable.

I like the article and will upvote, although I think it would be interesting to know more about the kappas. For example addendum 2 only includes 1 paragraph about their habitat.

I understand that is because the article is more focused on the Mongolia anomaly, as opposed to the kappas. I do find it a bit odd that kappas apparently existed as a myth for a very long time, but no one noticed until they moved. I also wonder why the Foundation would designate the kappas with a subdesignation as opposed to giving them the 2511 designation.

However I understand why it is written the way it is and find the basic concept to be interesting and amusing.

Well, this is an attempt to avoid the "adapt mythological creature" route that my previous kappa SCP was critiqued for. The kappas are more of a biological curiosity than outright anomaly; the real anomaly is their sudden appearance in Mongolia and why there's always more of them in that country.

As amusing as it was for the kappa to think JK Rowling was some kind of prophet, I'm mighty pleased by the changes you've made to this article, and I think it's considerably better than the original. :)

Upvoting after some hesitation. Don't get me wrong, it's excellently written, but I was also iffy about a mass reality shift based on a Harry Potter novel

Now that you've explained the corollary move, with us being a rare creature showing up in their mythology based on a world with SCP-1000, that's a very neat play. I just didn't get that on the read-through.

"legends our forefathers had written" sounds like they might just have been misinformed or distant from the action, rather than a deliberate work of fiction.

(Also, I think classifying the kappa -A was a good choice. Add flavor to the universe by implication.)

Sunny pointed me to this, after having done artwork of it! I enjoyed reading it, and I liked the 1000 connection.

…It also fits with 1000, and the canon that 1000 was created for, far more than it looks on first read, largely because of… what I guess currently just counts as my headcanon because it isn't text anywhere. :P Stuff about reality bending. Maybe I need to write about it, I guess.

Extremely belated response, since I had no meaningful response in mind initially… until now (obviously).

When I read through SCP-1000 recently, I noted this particular line:

Supposedly a trickster forest god showed humanity favor

And I thought: "Would SCP-2511-A be that trickster forest god"?

I mean, kappas traditionally fit the two ideas on "trickster" and "god". The "forest" aspect is a bit of a stretch, unless the river is within a forest.

Nevertheless, the choice to use SCP-1000 for this particular crosslink is to debunk the supposed gravitas of the ancient Bigfoot-humanity conflict AND to serve as a lead-in to the punchline of this article.

At this point, it could be anything from an actual trickster deity to an arms dealer or an SCP-1000 instance who sympathises with humans. Although I see 1848 to be more of a troll than anything else.
