Well, as a member of The Backrooms community, as well as a staff member from over there, it felt like I should point that out over anything else. Recently, we've been getting some traction from the SCP wiki, which is always good!
The jist of The Backrooms is what it says on the tin; The Backrooms. However, in the case of The Backrooms, it is a creative interpretation of The Backrooms, where there are more than a single, or three levels, all of which vary wildly. Each Level is vaguely reminiscent of The Frontrooms (which is our universe), and are built upon using Entities. Entities are creatures which can be found wandering some Levels. Some take up a majority of the Levels, well some may be unique to a specific Level. We have a wide selection of tales and canons (I actually made The Council Canon, and am working on expanding upon it more and more), and we also feature objects, which are kind of what they say on the tin.
We, similar to here, are a community of writers. I personally have written quite a bit over there, and am working on writing more. We aren't as focused on narrative relating to the Levels themself, however, our canons expand upon the lore of The Backrooms greatly, including the most recent one, the Industrialization canon. This one in particular has been gaining quite a bit of traction.
If I were to recommend you some works to start, I would definitely say Level 0, the original Backrooms made off the 4chan post. However, there are many more works then this which are all decent, which I'll list as follows:
Levels
- Level 6 is one of the most "dark-esq" based Levels on the site, and was written with this intention in mind. Filled with illusions and terror, insanity comes commonly to wanderers here…
- Level 18 has always been known for being a weird one, but I recently rewrote this one to be much more prominently connected. This Level is based upon your childhood memories, and degrades at your sanity through this process.
- Level 178 is my personal favorite article on the site, for good reason to. It is one of the most in-depth on the site, and resembles a Chinese home. This one is highly recommended from me, though that may be personal preference.
- Level 241 is one of the strangest ones on the site, but it was executed in a perfect way. This Level may be hard to grasp, but it's all within a especially hairy dog, and is a dog pound.
- Level 666 may be a controversial pick, at least for site standards, as many believe that hell within The Backrooms isn't the best pick. However, the interpretation, as well as the execution is what makes me truly love this Level. I was one who actually pushed for its feature.
- Level 777 was written by me, but it has to be included in this. As it stands, this is the longest Level on the site, so you'll be in for a wild ride. I'm actually writing a Level twice this length rn, so I'll include that when the time comes. As it stands for now, however, infinite gambling is infinite gambling.
- Level 999 is the last Level I'll include off the positive Levels list, due to it being the last Level in cluster 1. I personally don't enjoy this, though I can see the appeal, so I leave it here.
- Level -4 is the first negative Level I'll include. It's short, but it captures the essence of a negative Level well, and shows you the theme they follow. For negative Levels, I recommend this one first.
- Level -13 was released recently, but its a perfect example of horror without danger, and is one I personally I critted. I recommend you read this one heavily.
- Level -183 is another one I wrote, but is a perfect example of a negative Level which breaks the norms. It is likely the least dangerous negative Level out, and will retain this for a while, but its a great start for a GoI, Backrooms Robotics (which I made to :P)
- Level 9.1 is the first Sub-l+Layer I'm gonna recommend, due to it being an example of expanding upon the host Levels lore, which is something I love within Sub-Layers.
- Level 178.1 I wrote this to This one is yet another example of a Sub-Layer which expands upon it's host layers lore, which I like to summarize as "Where do all the monsters go?"
- Level fun =) an iconic one, and is one of the few examples of altering Entities, which is something I love.
- The Blue Channel expands upon the concept of infinity in such a unique way, which is why I fought for it to be featured (and it was!).
- The Oxygen Ocean is a controversial pick. Not for the Level itself, but for the fact that I'm not listing it as a tale. However, for this sake, it's listed as a Level. It expands upon the Leviathan, which is my favorite Entity 1 proposal.
Entities
- The Leviathan is my favorite Entity 1 proposal, with good reason to. It's vague, mysterious, yet it captures the essence of Entity 1 so well.
- Smilers are a strange Entity, and are mysteriously horrifying. I have mixed feelings about putting them here, but they are quite apparent in many Levels, so it's effectively a given to include it here.
- Jerry is a parrot who influences the minds of others greatly, making his own cult like group. This is one of the more meme based entries, but it is written very well nevertheless, and is deserving of a spot on this list.
- Insanites. This is only included on the list due to its reference in many articles. Concept-wise, this was written very well, but the execution is tame. I am only including this due to its significance. Moving on.
- The Artist. Same as above, but I enjoy this one more :3
- The Partygoers =) are a very famous Entity, due largely due to their creepy yet cute persona, as well as their unique take on software edits. Highly recommended.
- Koko is a self insert is a very unique Entity in that it doesn't reside on Levels, but rather, the internet within The Backrooms. Highly recommended, as it grasp the concept of AI pretty well.
- The Game Master is, by far, the most iconic on the site, clocking in second highest rated, only beaten by Level 0 itself. The Game Master is highly controversial, however, it is a rare case of an Entity which has higher status then the Level, and is executed in a marvelous way.
- The Dollmaker is quite a sad Entity, and was made quite recently. It took the negative aspects of The Game Master and made them much more likeable, and overall is considered one of my favorites.
- The Plush Dino is one of the cutest Entities on the site, and is written with that in mind. This is one of the few Entities which are non-dangerous, and actively want to be helpful in any way they can.
- Cheshires finish off the list well, and are quite gimmicky! They are adorable little creatures, and I love them a lot!
Tales
…I don't read tales as much, if you can't tell…
Objects
Objects are meant to be read blind, so no description will be provided. As stated above, they are simply objects found throughout The Backrooms, but they aren't always what they seem…
I hope you consider checking out The Backrooms Wiki, we'd love to have you!
