Page Type: SCP Article

Genre: Horror

Elevator Pitch: A faith consuming organism feeding off of the collective hate found in lynch mobs with genocidal motives.

Page Layout: My plan is to explore the concept through both recovered documents and logs that delve into first-hand accounts of anomalous events. These events will likely reference both historic and current events of attempted (and successful) ethnic cleansing. My shortlist is the murders of Venezuelan immigrants in neighboring Latin American countries, the Tulsa, Ohio massacres, and Dessaline-era massacres of the white French population of Haiti.

Central Narrative: I hope to explore different reactions to both the context of the events and the slow descent into madness as things get weirder and darker. Hopefully coming to a conclusion (?) of hate as a passenger within all groups and how inclusion of insiders leads to exclusion of outsiders. The SCP will be a horrific pastiche of this real-world passenger.

Hook/Attention-Grabber: I want to come up with containment procedures that reference this creature's preferred 'habitat' in spite-filled social groups. For example, certain behaviors to be monitored or red flags of radicalization. I also think it'd be a bit funny to have the Foundation attempting to prevent hatespeech or things like that, the sort of protocols to prevent a creature that feeds off of hate end up becoming just general 'don't be a dick' rules. Seeing that in a clinical Foundation style tone would, I think, be unexpected and interesting.

Additional Notes: First SCP and I do realize it's a bit of a…tough subject. I was inspired by similar faith eating SCPs, however decided to take the idea away from religion and towards another shared belief that can certainly bring folks together. Also inspired by, uh, real life events. As Oscar-deserving actor Sinbad once said "it's a sick world we're living in, with sick people".

Right off the bat I'm going to say that I find this very problematic for a host of reasons.

This touches on a lot of problematic issues that even experienced authors struggle to do in a way that isn't decisive or just downright offensive. As a new author to the site, I do not at all believe that you have the experience necessary to be able to succeed in places where I've seen many many many others fail.

I'm not saying that you aren't experienced, but I have no frame of reference by which to adequately judge. As so, that alone would prevent me from giving this the go-ahead.

I also think it'd be a bit funny to have the Foundation attempting to prevent hatespeech or things like that, the sort of protocols to prevent a creature that feeds off of hate end up becoming just general 'don't be a dick' rules.

While Hanlon's Razor dictates that I should take this particular statement with a grain of salt, I can't help but think that this is a straight up dig at the very carefully considered rules that govern this very site. Even if it isn't, the complex and often extremely volatile effort to combat hate and hate speech in all it's myriad form is by no means "funny" on any scale that I would willingly consider it.

There are already lots and lots of examples of clinical tone in papers, press reports, government documentation, police reports, etc. While I do not disagree that some of them are interesting, creating an SCP article would by no means be a unique take on the topic.

As of right now, I would strongly advise dropping this particular idea and moving on to something else entirely. Maybe revisit it after you have gotten your legs under you and have more experience in writing for the site.

Hmm, I do agree that it's maybe not a great idea off the bat. I do have experience writing academic papers on these topics as I work in education/applied linguistics and discourse analysis and provide teacher training for lower income schools as well as frequently tackle bullying issues at the university level. These both often intersect with underlying social ills.

I, unfortunately, also have firsthand experiences with xenophobia. Not quite as bad as others! But in total transparency, I can't deny that part of my writing about it, as it is with anything I feel the need to write, is definitely to express those feelings.

And definitely not a dig at the site! Sorry if it came off that way. 'Don't be a dick' is one of my mantras.

And for me it isn't exactly funny 'ha-ha', but for example, political discourse analysis is often approached from a humanistic point of view where it's taken for a given that protection of all groups is essential. This is not as assumption the Foundation often seems to take, valuing the whole over individual liberties and well-being.

Examples might state to monitor all discourse which features nationalistic keywords or overt references to an ideal society which is sabotaged by particular groups.

Thanks for taking the time to comment though. I'll keep working on other ideas and perhaps return to it for a different project or once I've got more experience here under my belt.
