An anomalous engagement ring that seems to alter the wearer's memories permanently, although evidence suggests that there is more under the veil. It turns out this seemingly normal engagement ring is able to shift people into almost identical realities. Each with a single difference to set it apart, most if not all of them hardly noticeable. As time goes on, the user drifts further and further away from what they are accustomed to as the world rapidly changes little by little, eventually becoming unrecognizable.
To outside observers, those affected appear to suffer from a memory deficiency of some sort. The article in question will largely follow the story of a woman who wore the engagement ring for years on end alongside her normal wedding band, detailing her experience having the ring and her eventual breakdown at the seemingly sudden death of her husband. Overtime, the widow will change from the perspective of the interviewer in terms of how she acts and different mannerisms and such; since from moment to moment, she is mentally a different person than who the researchers had been dealing with before. Giving us both sides to coin simultaneously.
Shoutout to Auxiphor for helping me expand on the idea a little bit.
