Living the dream, or dreaming the life?
I honestly never thought I would be upvoting an article about gay lovers on the SCP Wiki of all places.
Um… does this… does this count as… smut…? Um… SCP smut?
……Can we name Foundation smut 'skipping' or is that too far?
Is this the right reality?
…Well, I upvoted. Pretty much seconding Corleone as well.
Definitely something different from what I'm used to reading… That's probably because I'm I'm here to look at weird scifi and I'm not really interested in characterization where the aforementioned weird scifi isn't involved somehow. If this floats more power to you and that audience. It just seems a bit awkward to me in that respect.
I wouldn't call this "smut", though. It's tastefully written.
Hey man. I'm good with smut. No insult was intended.
It was tastefully written, but it definitely had a dry/sarcastic undertone (at least, I picked up on it, so correct me if I'm wrong, Soulless) which led me to believe it was halfway intended for humor. Especially given the title. (The title-title, not the URL title.)
It's not really meant to be humorous. I just wanted to depict an unhealthy romantic relationship. If this stays low and people are mad enough, I'll delete it and depict a different unhealthy romantic relationship later.
Living the dream, or dreaming the life?
I want to upvote a tale about gay lovers, and involving Iceberg dying, but I can't really get into this, or the development of either character. Even if it's well-written, it's not the story that I can believe or feel like I want to read.
EDIT: In light of a post I made later on, I'm removing my downvote becauae I feel that this is very true to the original characters. Again, this doesn't develop how I'd like it to, but it's a good take on it nonetheless.
I had the exact same problem with it. Just not feeling it. Down vote.
Read it over a few times. And just not feeling much from it. The lack of capitalization in the title annoys me but not basing my vote on that.
everyone who downvoted this is weak
EDIT:
This is a joke.
It was a statement made for humorous purposes.
Some people may think this is a serious sentiment being expressed.
They are wrong.
It is not.
It is a joke.
For humor.
Addendum to what I said before:
Even though I like this, it's not what I want to see on the wiki. This is barely connected to the Foundation at all, and it's a fairly standard love story. We don't need SJW fanfic here, even if it is well written.
Being gay =/= SJW
Or any sort of social statement for that matter.
We have several love stories on the wiki, and several stories even more loosely connected to the Foundation.
I'm saying that the story rides on them being in love and is barely related to the Foundation. And I'm saying that's a little out of place for a military/science-fiction wiki. Not because they're gay, but because it's a love story.
IMO
E: It's out of place because it's a love story, not because they're gay. Being gay is aight
Why is it out of place?
It's not related to the Foundation save for the names of the characters. I could literally change their names and it would just be a generic love story.
I was operating under the assumption this was a horror/milfic/science-fiction site. Love stories are okay, don't get me wrong, but they have to be related to the Foundation in a greater capacity than just having a couple random characters in them.
Again, my opinion
They aren't random characters.
If Gears was a different character capable of expressing emotions, the tale would be very different. The entire story revolves around the result of that dynamic.
As for related to the Foundation-ness, as I said earlier, we have works that are even less related to the site, and they get posted without people crying "SJW! Doesn't belong here!"
I wasn't crying. I upvoted the damn thing.
I just like reading about things exploding sometimes. Know what I mean?
And tales about things exploding vastly outnumber tales like this. You're welcome to read those at any time.
Okay, this conversation is drifting out of constructive and into flame war. This line of discussion is closed.
We don't need SJW fanfic here,
Sure we do. BRB writing SJW fanfic.
Actually, this statement is a bit disappointing because this isn't even remotely SJW fanfic. I was hoping.
My only objection is that the title would be stronger if it specified a temperature, rather than just giving it as "frigid temperatures".
Otherwise this is hella gay and touching and I like it.
if your reading this your gay
I swore I would never say "[insert form of fiction here] has no place on this site", but I'm breaking that rule: slash fics have no place on this site, no matter how they're played. If this was played in a more comedic manner, I wouldn't mind it as much.
Before I get anyone on my case, let me say this much: romance is perfectly fine on the wiki. I've seen romantic relationships between characters in the Foundationverse done very well on several occasions, and I'm attempting to write a romantic relationship between two women in a tale series I'm working on.
The difference between a romance and a slash fic is that the romance story at least attempts to characterize the people in the relationship, even if it isn't done well. A slash fic just takes pre-existing characters and throws them in a blender, making up reasons as to why they would stick. This tale is in the latter category.
-1.
A slash fic just takes pre-existing characters and throws them in a blender, making up reasons as to why they would stick.
That is not actually correct, nor does it describe this story. It's also a very strange line: this describes the characterization process period. That's … how you write character relationships of any kind, except you're describing it negatively.
Also: You could say "the characterization wasn't done well" (and then I would merely disagree). But saying that the story did not even attempt to characterize the people in the relationship just makes your comment objectively incorrect.
I mean, this story actually is pretty much just characterization.
Actually, he's right. The characters…aren't really characters. They're pretty much there to serve as conduits for a love story. They aren't fleshed out at all.
I can see why this has sparked up so much debate, and, based on earlier comments, I was afraid it would be way more explicit. But it's not. It's a gay romantic tragedy. Nothing I wouldn't expect from an R-Rated (or even a racy PG-13) film on a similar subject.
That said, I'm not sure how I feel. They're both certainly in-character. I'm just not sure Gears would ever see Iceberg that way. I see him as being pretty much asexual. Actually, Iceberg, too. Like, Iceberg is kind of "Senpai Gears, please notice me," but I'm not sure it would be sexual, even if consensus Iceberg were into dudes.
However, I have been on the Gears end of this relationship (unsure if one is doing enough in a relationship/unsure what more to do), and I can appreciate the tragedy of preferring a miserable status quo to uncertain change. Perhaps this could be executed better, or less controversially, but I think I'll upvote. I may reconsider at a later date upon rereading.
Context: This comment is mostly for entertainment value. I enjoy character discussion.
I'm just not sure Gears would ever see Iceberg that way. I see him as being pretty much asexual.
He is almost certainly asexual and/or aromantic, but he also had a kid. Asexual people can have relationships. Also sex.
Actually, Iceberg, too.
This doesn't fit with any of his characterization except right before he kills himself. Grimly, that's partly why he kills himself: he stops feeling anything, and this goes so against his self-concept that he ends it. (See: In His Own Image.)
Asexual people can have sex
Yes, but they choose not to.
What I'm pretty sure moose is trying to say is that asexual people don't necessarily don't have sex. Asexual people can and sometimes do have sex for a variety of reasons (wanting children, pleasing a partner, just to see what the fuss is, etc.) they just aren't sexually attracted to things.
Living the dream, or dreaming the life?
Speaking from experience, it takes quite a lot for an asexual person to have sex outside of, say, reproduction. Maybe that's the point of the story, I dunno.
He kills himself? Broken Goddamnit, Moose, I haven't read that yet!
Let that be a lesson to you. Always finish TroyStories. Always.
I didn't really like this that much. It's too short, and I concur with ihpkmn's sentiment about this not really being particuraly well-developed from a character standpoint.
Also:
Dr. Iceberg became less reactionary and stopped trying to get reactions.
This kind of switched me from a neutral vote to a downvote. Aside from being repetitive, I've never seen "reactionary" used in a non-political sense.

Uh… Ok. I've fixed that sentence to "Dr. Iceberg stopped trying to get reactions."
