Challenge Threads

Because it’s about time we made a list.

For a challenge thread to be added here, they must have either one or both of the following:
- At least five “I’m interested” or “I’m doing this” comments/posts, from different users. A challenge should be inspirational to authors and encourage discussion!
- At least one successful page on the site that resulted from the challenge. A challenge should produce good work and fun!

Notice: this material has been ported over to the page Writing Challenge List. Updates will continue on that page.

If I’ve missed a challenge or one has recently become eligible for the list, let me (Zyn) know in comments on PM. Happy writing!

Update 2021: Challenge Threads are now in the Research and Resources forum, no longer in the Ideas Critique forum.

Somehow I missed this… yes, anyone can make a new challenge thread anytime, provided that the Site Rules are followed while doing so (don't spam challenge threads, don't make trolling challenge threads, etc.).

If you have an idea for a challenge, just make a thread for yourself on this forum (Ideas and Brainstorming). If your thread gets the requisite amount of response (5 "I'll do it" posts and/or a successful mainsite piece resulting from someone taking the challenge), then message me and I'll add it to the list at the top.

If awhile passes and no one posts on your challenge thread, you can post a link here once. Discussion about specific challenge threads should be posted on those threads, so this thread doesn't get bogged down.

Still kind of curious about how posting ideas for challenges work. I have an idea a story about it full desription and all but im new and not really familiar with the template and im only using a phone to write on which sucks so for now i think i would rather post ideas and maybe get somoeone more experienced some inspiration please help

If you're thinking of writing up an article in response to a challenge, go to a challenge thread that interests you, read the requirements for the challenge, and then start writing. You can ask questions about the requirements in that challenge thread as well.

If you're thinking about writing up a challenge thread, just make a new thread in Ideas and Brainstorming with the title "CHALLENGE THREAD:" and then the name. If there's enough interest and people who write for the challenge, it'll get added to the list at the top of this collective thread.

for now i think i would rather post ideas and maybe get somoeone more experienced some inspiration please help

If you'd like some help on an idea that isn't related to a challenge, then make a new thread in the Ideas and Brainstorming thread. Take a look at what other users have posted to get a feel for how the forum works.

Challenges are simply, "Hey, writers, how about writing about this?" The challenge for itself doesn't need to require much backstory.

For example, I've participated in two challenges so far. Mr. Wrong's Fill Up The Map Challenge asks people to find a country with no SCPs in it (as the Partial Worldwide SCP Map shows) and place an SCP there. I've added Pakistan and Bulgaria to that list.

Then, there was Dexanote's challenge: tell a story about two SCPs fighting, as told from the point of view of a non-Foundation civilian. I wrote Funerals Are Fun.

So, really, the challenge should set boundaries (but none that are too specific). The stories are what should come out of the challenge. As a result, most of the more interesting challenges are going to be set by people well aware of the community and the site content, in order to figure out what sort of challenge would be interesting to write, but, of course, there's no actual requirements to become a challenge proposer. When you've got the idea, present it. Hopefully, it's the articles that come out of the challenge that have that entertaining story.

Also, yeah, avoid writing SCPs on just a phone. It can be done, but having an honest-to-goodness keyboard in front of me helps a LOT.

I am interested in practicing the writing format of SCP articles. I am looking for basic ideas for SCPs from other members. I would then base the article upon them, creating the containment procedures and elaborating on them. Example: Someone may give me an object and one anomalous property about it. I would then elaborate on it and write the article. This is only for me to practice the format of article writing. Any ideas are appreciated.

This approach actually doesn't work that well for writing SCP articles up to current standards. "Object + effect" is effectively something more along the lines of stuff written five or more years ago; now there's more of an emphasis on backstory and what makes an item more than just a thing that does a thing.

Furthermore, authors are encouraged to think up their own ideas. If you're really pressed for inspiration, consider taking a look through the Fragments page and writing up some of the ideas there.

It had been around for some time, but I have issued a challenge to the site to make SCPs in places not yet shown to have SCPs recovered.

And why did I did that? SCPs are too saturated in North America and Western Europe, which does not feel realistic if we regard the Foundation to be international in nature.

Current success stories:

• SCP-2459 by WrongJohnSilver (Pakistan)
• SCP-2402 by WrongJohnSilver (Bulgaria)
• SCP-2970 by TyGently (Spain)

SCP-2538 is also apart of this challenge, representing Serbia. Given how Moenennbys has said they're working on one for Norway, I think that would fit all the parameters for it being added to the challenge page.

The perfect SCP termination: Mix a large sample of SCP-666½-J with a cup of "Dear God No" from SCP-294, and feed it to whatever SCP has to be terminated. Problem solved.
