I would like to participate in the image-credit-a-thon. i could work on the 1700 to 1799 block and the 1800 to 1899 and the 1900 to 1999 block. Also i really have nothing better to do with my time. so i might be more active than most of the members. Also this may seem like a red-flag but if i do a reverse image search and the image is on multiple websites how do i know what is the original source?

I'm just posting here to apologize for slacking off on my sourcing. I've had a lot of schoolwork to do, and that's taken precedence over everything else.

I've gotten 200-221 done (excepting 206), and I'll be able to finish my slot some time in June, after school ends. Until then, I've got a lot on my plate.

What if the article's storyline relies on the inclusion of the image itself, and would leave a giant plothole/continuity error if removed?

Does this mean that the author themselves will have to change the content of the article, however drastically? And if so, how will this be organised with inactive users?

To add to Zyn's response, it's really hard for us to put enough trust and confidence in someone to do something like this if we don't know you to begin with. If you want to get involved in big projects like this, then you need to get on IRC first and let us get to know each other.

Well, if you're staff or well-known (for a good reason, naturally), it definitely helps in terms of trust and experience.

Contact Roget, if you really want to help out. We've got the Image Team specifically for this, and they've already assembled several non-staff people, but you can always ask if there's something for you to do.

To be clear, this isn't just about permission from the copyright owner to "use" the image. You need to obtain permission to release the image under Creative Commons, which is effectively putting it out in the public domain. The copyright owner has to know that that's what you're doing and give you explicit permission to license it thus.

I GIS'd the image for SCP-740 and photoshopped it. It's actually a combination of Hindenburg and Polaroid frame. I don't feel the article can stand without the image, and I don't think there's any way to get a new one that complies with all these new rules.

1. Removing from the page, because the copyright holder may give permission, at which point we'd return the image with the accreditation.

2. Review as in asking us to look at a specific article first? I guess we'd do it if we had time, but if a lot of people asked us to do theirs first, we'd have to stop doing requests and just continue doing them in order. If you want us to tell you what your image is so you have time to talk to the creator/replace it, we can do that too, maybe.

3. Copyright is important to like, protect intellectual property and stuff. I hate how we've had such a cavalier attitude for it for so long, it's probably going to cause us more issues going into the future.

1) Are you clearing out non-compliant images from the files area as well, not just removing them from the page? I had a skip I took the image out of the first time this became an issue and I just removed it now because I hadn't thought to do so then.

2) Can we ask for an up-front, in-faith review of an article? I've got a skip that's pretty reliant on its image and if it's deemed non-compliant, I'm not sure what I could do as a remedy.

3) I hate copyright. Not a question, just sayin'.

It's separate enough that anything happening to it wouldn't affect the mainsite beyond "Shit! All of our drafts got taken down! That sucks!" and that's only a worst-worst case scenario.

Yeah… the sandbox pages can be a mess. Oh, I have a quick follow-up question. Is the sandbox technically part of the main site? I suppose a better question would be can the community get in legal trouble over posting non-CC images on there?

Not for now. There's just waaaay to much to cover there, in a disorganized jumble. Hopefully nobody hosts non-CC images there, since they wouldn't be allowed on the site. One day we might get to doing it, but it won't be soon.

Good question though. I hadn't thought of the sandbox(s) at all.

Hi! So, we've been told that people are asking about what the image team is doing, and why some images are being taken down, and oh god did I use the wrong image am I going to be banned???

Well, worry not dear reader, because things are just fine.

You see, I have assembled a crack team of people with too much time on their hands to help me in my quest to make sure all images used on the site are CC compliant. If you have an article with an image taken down, it was because the image violated CC. Now, we may leave the image itself alone, and only go after the page code that displays it. This is because we're contacting the image creator for permission. Once we have that, the image will be restored.

To answer a few questions I've heard, frequently asked by many of you fine souls:

I had an image taken down! Does this mean I'm in trouble?

Nope! It simply means that the image was not compliant. Since the staff in the past five years did not give a rats ass about images, a large number of non-compliant images sneaked into the site. You were not told that it was a bad thing, so punishing you would be meaningless.

Now, after we get this all done, and make a few changes to make sure nobody can say "I didn't know"(Probably by editing the template, rules, etc.) you might get in some amount of trouble. We'll see how that works out. But if you posted an article at any time before now, and really probably for another couple of months while we get used to the new policy, you won't get more than a "don't do it again".

Who is doing all this image taking downing?

A list of which blocks have been assigned to whom can be found here. We are still accepting volunteers, so if you wish to help, please come into #site77 on IRC! Note that helping with this project is NOT an automatic guarantee of any promotion of any sort at any time, but it will get you noticed by one of our most outstanding and handsome staff members!

Will I be told if my image is taken down?

Our people are supposed to be sending out PM's to those who have images in violation. If you had an image taken down and did not recieve a PM, please tell me in PM and link to the article in question so I know who to yell at.

Don't I, as page owner, have final say over what happens to my page?

Content-wise? Absolutely. But this is a legal matter. If the image you have is in violation of the law, we will remove it. Simple as that.

If you have any further questions, or just want to comment on the project, feel free to leave a comment here!
